Project Summary
Delivering Strategic Toll Road
PT Waskita Karya was tasked with constructing the Jakarta - Cikampek II Selatan Toll Project, one of the strategic toll roads in West Java, Indonesia. Working on the third of three development packages, the USD 175 million, 27.85-kilometer road began in January 2019 and was targeted to be complete by the end of 2020. However, progress was slow because almost 75% of the land was still in the process of being acquired so that PT Waskita Karya could build on it. Also, the project owner had several design changes, and the initial survey was not sufficient. To meet the deadline, the team needed a more efficient alternative to traditional design.
Seeking Faster Design Delivery
To overcome these challenges, PT Waskita Karya sought a way to develop accurate models to streamline construction and increase their profit margin. They considered using BIM workflows, but the technology was new to Indonesia at the time. Therefore, there was no regulation. Additionally, successful projects often required contractors in the field to provide feedback on the design proposal. So, the team needed software that had set workflows and would let them produce drawings while in the field, allowing them to quickly adapt to changing designs.
Developing 3D Reality Model
Already familiar with Bentley applications, PT Waskita Karya used ContextCapture to take images and point cloud data to create a 3D reality model of the site. OpenBridge Modeler and OpenRoads helped contribute to modeling all roadways, bridges, and interchanges. The interoperability of the software enabled model sharing in a third-party connected data environment for centralized management. Contractors in the field could contribute to an efficient, profitable design by producing shop drawings. With LumenRT, the team created a highly visual model that was easily understood by all project participants, including stakeholders and finance groups.
Providing Visualization for Improved Project Progress
By using Bentley applications, PT Waskita Karya eliminated the need to produce cross-section drawings from scratch when the client changed horizontal and vertical alignments, cutting design time. They also eradicated unexpected costs by detecting clashes early in the construction stage. The 3D model was precise and full of important information, incorporated into a highly visual environment that people from all parts of the project could understand. The model streamlined approvals, helping the project’s progress moving forward.
