As the city of Klaukkala, Finland continues to grow, its road system has become increasingly busy, especially since much of the traffic was routed through the city’s center. To ease congestion and improve traffic safety, the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency planned a EUR 34 million bypass road that would accommodate growing transportation needs and direct traffic away from the city center. The agency engaged Finnmap Infra Oy to design the project, though they had to keep costs under control while delivering a high-quality road.
When planning the road’s location, Finnmap Infra Oy determined that the optimal path would take it through a rocky area. Though the usual solution would be to remove the rocks, transporting large amounts of surplus rock away from the road would greatly increase project costs. To stay within budget, the design team needed to find a way to minimize rock removal and design the road around the existing environment. They realized that traditional design methods could not provide the level of accuracy needed to incorporate the road into the rock masses while also keeping the design safe for motorists.
After examining their options, Finnmap Infra Oy determined that they could minimize rock removal by creating a digital twin of the project with Bentley applications. They began by capturing images of the project area and creating a reality mesh of the environment with ContextCapture. Next, they modeled the road and its support structures with Descartes, OpenRoads, and MicroStation. By visualizing the design, the team learned how to optimize the rock cuts and elevate the road so that many of the rock masses could be retained as fills. Lastly, they created a construction simulation with LumenRT to visualize the project and its construction schedule.
By creating a digital twin of the project, Finnmap Infra Oy was able to minimize the amount of rock removal needed and reuse as much of the existing masses as possible. Careful planning improved the quality of the road and reduced construction costs by 20%. Additionally, minimizing rock removal reduced the amount of carbon emissions produced by heavy transport vehicles. By simulating construction, the design team could clearly communicate their design intent to stakeholders, the media, and residents. Using a digital twin, Finnmap Infra Oy shortened the development and construction schedule by a full year.
