Drone Surveying for BIM and GIS Data Capture – Malaysian Metro Megaproject
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
User Project Profiles
The Sungai-Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Line is a 52.2-kilometer railway line that runs through the dense urban center of Kuala Lumpur and its southern suburbs, serving approximately 2 million people. As Malaysia’s first metro megaproject, it includes constructing 13.5-kilometer twin-bored tunnels and 17 individual construction sites, the largest exceeding 17,000 square meters. MMC Gamuda Joint Venture (MMC) is the turnkey contractor tasked with optimizing design and constructability of the USD 7.5 billion project. To accommodate the large-scale combined elevated and underground rail alignment, as well as voluminous data, MMC required integrated technology for quick, accurate, and safe surveying, modeling, and information sharing.
MMC used unmanned aerial vehicles to quickly capture hundreds of high-quality images and infinite amounts of data along the project corridor, processing images with ContextCapture to deliver accurate 3D reality meshes of the sites. Using ProjectWise to establish an open, connected data environment provided the interoperability to make the reality models available across cloud-based BIM and GIS data platforms, enhancing understanding of existing site conditions. MMC generated digital twins of its construction sites and developed integrated workflows that helped expand the applications of reality modeling.
Using drones and ContextCapture accelerated the reality capture workflow, increasing productivity by an estimated 30 to 50 times compared to traditional surveys. Working in a connected data environment across cloud-based platforms simplified and streamlined accessibility to the 3D models, saving significant time when understanding existing and current site conditions to enhance decision-making. Combining reality capture with BIM enabled MMC to push the boundaries of reality modeling for accurate measurements, progress monitoring, and risk management, industrializing project delivery. The flexible technology solution facilitated digital survey, modeling, and data sharing processes that saved over 1,000 resource hours for surveyors, project managers, and engineers.
OUTCOME / FACTS
- MMC reinvented conventional surveying and optimized design and construction of Malaysia’s USD 7.5 billion metro megaproject.
- The unmanned aerial vehicles and ContextCapture provided a cost-effective data capture solution that helped save over 1,000 resources hours.
- Integrating ProjectWise with cloud-based data platforms streamlined accessibility to the 3D reality meshes, enabling engineers and constructors to better understand current site conditions and context.
“[Reality modeling] is becoming business as usual for MMC Gamuda and that is a real testament to the ease of using ContextCapture.”
