Tunnel engineering is a critical discipline for any project that involves infrastructure passing through natural or man-made barriers. However, the market has lacked a dedicated tool specifically for tunnel design. Additionally, from a tunnel design perspective, project teams have traditionally worked in silos, with geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, architects, designers, and data collectors each focusing on their own areas of expertise.

As a result, a lot of critical information on projects gets lost in translation through cross platform communications between stakeholders and traditional design software that is too generalized to suit the requirements of tunnelling projects.

With OpenTunnel Designer, this disconnect is over, since it is the first and only purpose-built software developed specifically to address the complexities of tunnel design, such as variable section geometry and horizontal and vertical curves, as well as the integration with structural and lining elements unique to tunnels. This specialized approach eliminates the need to adapt general design tools to such a particular context.

Furthermore, its seamless integration with PLAXIS and Leapfrog enables tunnel and geotechnical engineers to collaborate more effectively, facilitating the exchange of geotechnical and structural data. This integration improves design accuracy and allows for a more thorough assessment of geotechnical risks.

I invite you to join this part 8 of the Civil WorkSuite webinar series, where you will discover OpenTunnel Designer while designing a tunnel connected to the road of our project.

What you will learn:

  • How to import terrain data and road model in OpenTunnel Designer.
  • How to model the full excavation shape, excavation tracks, tunnel lining, and reinforcement with native modeling tools.
  • How to create multiple analytical models in minutes. Specify stations for the cross sections as the basis of your 2D analytical model or send the entire 3D model of your tunnel to PLAXIS Geotechnical Analysis with the push of a bottom. No coding required!
  • How to create plans, profiles, and X section drawings, as OpenTunnel is built on top of MicroStation.
  • How to create tunnel-specific reports based on the latest changes for up-to-date accurate costing and quantities.
